If you have a history of heart failure, ask the doctor doing the RHC in advance if they will be prepared to do a Fluid Challenge if the Wedge pressure reading merits it.
I didn’t have that done in my initial RHC and had to have another one done by a different doctor who was more knowledgeable on all the implications of Wedge readings .
If you do have a heart failure history, let me know and I can elaborate more.

What should you expect from your upcoming right heart catheterization?
Most myPHteam members describe right heart catheterization as painless and easier than expected. Many who were initially nervous found the procedure was "over before I knew it" with no pain whatsoever.
What to expect during the procedure:
- You'll lie on your back with electrodes attached for heart monitoring
- You may receive a mild sedative to help you relax (but you'll stay awake)
- The insertion area will be numbed with local anesthetic
- A thin catheter will be inserted through a vein in your neck, groin, or arm
- The entire procedure takes about an hour
Common sensations during the test:
- Chest fluttering
- Lightheadedness
- Pressure in your veins
- A warm sensation from medications
You can tell your doctor if you experience any discomfort during the procedure.
After the procedure:
- You'll stay at the facility for a couple hours for monitoring
- Some members experienced mild soreness at the insertion site for a day or two
- You shouldn't drive or exert yourself physically for a period of time due to the sedative
- Your doctor will discuss results and care instructions with you
One myPHteam member summed it up well: "I worked myself up for nothing. It's not a bad test at all."
