Hi Diane, in case you are worried about the procedure ... I was very anxious about the heart cath, its the only time I've had any procedure that involved my heart, which made it seem like a very big deal in my mind. However, I was surprised at how quick and low key the procedure was. In fact I found it very interesting. Hoping you'll have a similar experience.
A RHC is the only way to diagnose PH/PAH. My doctor warns the team when I go in that I am a talker and will ask questions are I watch the procedure.
Diane, a good site that covers all aspects of PAH is www.pahinitiative.com. They have a very informative video series. @A myPHteam Member is correct. The gold standard for diagnosis is a RHC. Most doctors will also do some sort of test to rule out blood clots in the lungs and sleep apnea. Some people do not have a clear-cut cause for PAH and additional tests may be required.
The right heart cath is the gold standard to diagnose PH.
