Should you ask about switching to a mask if your nasal cannula is causing a runny nose and breathing difficulties?

A face mask might help with breathing difficulties, especially if you need higher oxygen volumes. However, masks can be less comfortable and may irritate your skin with their straps. You'll also need to remove it during meals.

Before switching to a mask, there are other solutions worth discussing with your doctor that might help while keeping your nasal cannula:

Humidification options:
- Adding a humidifier to your oxygen machine can reduce nasal discomfort
- Ask your doctor to include a humidifier in your oxygen prescription

Topical treatments:
- Water-based creams or oil-in-water products (avoid petroleum jelly)
- Saline sprays or gels can help with dryness
- Ear pads for your nasal cannula

Check medication side effects:
Some PH medications can cause runny noses or nasal congestion, so review your medications with your doctor.

A myPHteam member shared: "Talk with your doctor and make sure your script for the oxygen machine is written with a humidifier. That way, you will always have a dose of moisture when using it."

Your doctor can help weigh the benefits of switching to a mask versus trying these comfort measures first.
