Research for a cure for PAH has been on going for many years. However, one needs to understand that there is not just one cause that contributes to the development of PAH. There are multi. In some cases there is no know cause such as in Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. So there is no one size fits all therapy at this point. However, there are several therapies that can slow down the progression. It is a matter of finding the best treatment for each individual patient. Sometimes it may mean trying out a few different ones until your PAH Team finds the best fit for you.
Of course money is usually the big thing that fuels any research.
Please remember that there are FIVE different subsets within Pulmonary Hypertension and PAH is only 1 of them. each of these subsets have completely different protocols and histories behind their protocol development. PAH, also referred to as Group 1, has had the largest number of specific medications get developed and used for treatments.
I am in Group 2 which is caused by Left Heart Disease. Currently Group 2 is treated only by treating the underlying cause...the heart disease. Though that might be changing as there are a couple of medications in different stages of clinical trials that might eventually get approved.
But you also use the word "cure" in your question...as of now the understanding is that Pulmonary Hypertension cannot be cured...but all these treatments are being developed to significantly extend and enhance our lives.
Stay tuned...
Researchers are exploring new therapies for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). A recent study published in May 2022 in Science Translational Medicine identified a protein called NOTCH3 involved in PAH. They developed a monoclonal antibody to block this process, which showed promising results in rat models by normalizing Show Full Answer
