I have it done annually by my general pulmonologist and then I provide a copy of the test to my PH specialist. A recent PFT is generally required for participating in a clinical study or even getting approved for certain medications. It also provides your care team with a fairly well rounded view of your overall pulmonary health. It's a very easy test to take.

A lung function test (also called a pulmonary function test or PFT) measures how well your lungs are working. It's a key tool used to monitor pulmonary hypertension and understand how the condition is affecting your breathing.

The most common type is called spirometry, where you simply breathe into a tube connected to a machine. It measures things like:

- How much air your lungs can hold
- How fast you can blow air out
- How well your lungs exchange oxygen

These tests are noninvasive, meaning nothing is inserted into your body — you just breathe in and out. Another common lung function test used for pulmonary hypertension is the six-minute walk test. You walk on flat ground for six minutes while your oxygen levels and symptoms are monitored. This helps your care team understand how much physical activity your body can handle and how PH is affecting your day-to-day life.

These tests are usually done every few months to track how things are going and guide your treatment plan.
