Members reacted with excitement to news that Adempas (riociguat) will soon be available in a generic form, with many hoping it will make this costly pulmonary hypertension medication more affordable. Several members shared their own experiences with the generic version of Opsumit, noting it works just as well, and one member broke down the striking cost difference between branded and generic pricing. A recurring theme was the tension between a doctor's hesitation about generics and patients' real financial relief, showing how access and affordability matter deeply to this community.

I researched my costs for Opsumit.

Opsumit....$13000. Copay $20
Macitentan (generic $1200)
Copay $10

Mind blowing.

That's genuinely exciting news for the PH community! A generic version of riociguat (Adempas) could be a real game-changer for affordability. As a quick refresher, Adempas works by stimulating an enzyme that helps dilate the pulmonary arteries, making it easier for blood to flow through the lungs.

It's approved for two groups of PH patients:

- Group 1 – Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH)
- Group 4 – Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) Generic medications typically cost significantly less than brand-name versions, which could reduce the financial burden for many patients — especially those who currently rely on copay assistance programs or specialty pharmacies to afford their treatment.

A few things worth keeping in mind:

- Always consult your doctor or specialist before switching from a brand-name to a generic medication
- Ask your specialty pharmacy about how this may affect your current pricing or assistance programs
- If currently benefiting from Bayer's copay assistance for Adempas, check whether that program still applies or if new options become available with the generic

This is definitely worth a conversation with your care team!

I prefer branded medicine in general…but generics help make these medicines available to “the masses” and I am one of those.
