What are the salt intake recommendations for PAH patients with low sodium levels?
For people with PAH, limiting sodium intake is generally recommended to help manage blood pressure in the lungs and reduce strain on the heart. The typical guidance is to keep sodium intake to no more than 2 grams (2,000 milligrams) per day, with some recommendations suggesting even lower limits of 1,500 milligrams per day for those with high blood pressure.
However, if you have low sodium levels in your blood (a condition called hyponatremia), your situation is more complex. This requires individualized medical guidance, as restricting salt too much could worsen your low sodium levels while consuming too much could strain your heart and lungs.
It's essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to find the right balance for your specific situation. They may need to adjust your diuretic medications or provide specific sodium intake targets based on your blood work and overall health status.
A registered dietitian who understands PAH can also help create a meal plan that addresses both your pulmonary hypertension and your low sodium levels safely.

I don't think the answer is a simple as just ingesting more salt. In fact I believe that could end up causing more harm than good.
For me, I just had to stop taking hydrochlorathiazide. The thiazide family of diuretics is known to sometimes cause kidney issues and blood sodium numbers that are out of whack.
Regardless, I wouldn't make any dietary or medicinal changes without conferring with her cardiologist, her PH specialist and/or her nephrologist.
