Why isn't CTEPH listed as one of the four main types of pulmonary hypertension?
CTEPH (chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension) is actually classified as Group 4 in the World Health Organization's classification system for pulmonary hypertension. This classification system divides pulmonary hypertension into five groups based on their underlying causes.
CTEPH is indeed recognized as its own distinct category because it has a unique cause - persistent blood clots in the lung arteries - and requires different treatment approaches than other types of pulmonary hypertension.
The WHO classification helps doctors determine the best treatment plan. For CTEPH specifically, surgical options like pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) or balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) are often the primary treatments, which differs from how other types of pulmonary hypertension are managed.
If you're seeing references that don't clearly list CTEPH as Group 4, it might be because some resources simplify the classification or focus on different aspects of pulmonary hypertension. However, CTEPH is definitely recognized as a distinct type in the medical community.
