PH is a general term for high blood pressure in the arteries connecting the lungs and heart. PAH is specifically one of five types of PH. It's a rare and progressive disorder where tiny blood vessels in the lungs narrow, creating high blood pressure. What makes PAH unique is that the high blood pressure it creates in the lungs is not caused by underlying lung or heart disease. This increased pressure causes the right side of the heart to work harder than normal, which can lead to heart damage over time.
