I know I need to lose weight. BMI is 33+ but I cannot walk because of my left knee. I cannot get knee replacement because of PH, my heart issues, and having had blood clots. Definitely in a pickle. I can barely take ten steps without having breathing issues so I have to use my Inogen when attempting to walk. I cannot even come up stairs from our basement without stopping at least once and sometimes twice. (Only 15 steps from our basement). I do have GERD as well as other issues. Anyone… read more
Deb,
My gastro Dr. didn't suggest anything other than don't eat at night as far as food choices to help control it, nothing.

Losing weight is not an easy thing for sure. I also have GERD tied in with my Scleroderma diagnosis in addition to PAH. It was recommended by my Rheumatologist/Scleroderma Specialist to try the Monash Low FODMAPS diet for my GERD as well as my SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth). This program cuts out multi foods that contribute to gastrointestinal issues and for me 98%:of my GERD. Rarely to I have Acid reflux now. Usually it is because of not paying attention to what I eat. I have cut ot all citrus foods of any kind and all tomato-based products. Also non or low fat products are recommended. No artificial sugars and so much more. It takes a bit of getting used to once you figure it out but it is very doable. It is a very clean diet and does not cut out any of the food groups. All meat, poultry, fish are allowed as are many fruit and vegetables. Also certain breads such as sourdough among others. Most dairy is allowed as are eggs. The benefits for me have been weight loss as well as almost eliminating GERD and SIBO. So it has been a winning situation. I have not been greatly active physically as i had to have bilateral foot surgery. So exercise has not played much of a part in my weight loss. I now have a BMI of 22....which is ideal for me. So all good.
I personally would be very afraid to use a weight loss med myself or have my husband try one either. His cardiologist advised against it for him.
And ours recommended it.... cause they said he needs to lose about 50 pounds and can't walk due to his knee..... so many different advice.
