Yes, feeling short of breath and fatigued after eating is something others with pulmonary hypertension can relate to! You're definitely not alone in this.
With PH, the heart and lungs already work harder than usual to move oxygen-rich blood through the body. After eating, your body redirects blood flow to help with digestion, which can put even more strain on your system — leaving you feeling breathless and wiped out. Here are a few tips that may help manage this:
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of large ones to reduce the digestive burden on your body
- Rest before and after eating to conserve energy
- Eat slowly and avoid rushing through meals
- Avoid heavy, hard-to-digest foods that may make your body work harder
- Sit upright during and after meals to make breathing easier
It's really important to mention this symptom to your doctor or care team, especially if it's getting worse. Fatigue and shortness of breath at rest can sometimes signal changes in your condition that need attention.
