Kim: The reality is that any tie in with PH and smoking is not very clear. I never smoked more than the 3 trial cigarettes that I didn’t like when I was 15 or so and I got PH plus several co-morbidities.

Of course it may have contributed to other issues you have…but even so, dwelling on yesterday will only deplete the energy you need to focus on today and tomorrow.

Be kind to yourself.

Feeling guilt and regret after a PH diagnosis is completely understandable, and you're far from alone in this. Many people go through a grieving process after diagnosis — including feelings of anger, bargaining, and depression — and self-blame often shows up in that mix too.

The important thing to know is that carrying guilt doesn't serve your health going forward. What matters most right now is focusing on the present and managing PH as well as possible. Here are some ways that can help work through those feelings:

- Talk therapy (psychotherapy) — a therapist can help navigate guilt and build healthier self-talk
- Mindfulness practices — these can quiet that inner critic and bring focus to the present
- Support groups — connecting with others who truly understand life with PH can bring real perspective and validation
- Medication — if guilt is feeding anxiety or depression, a doctor can discuss options

One myPHteam member shared that they worked hard on changing their self-talk toward self-compassion, recognizing that being kind to yourself is actually part of being your own best advocate.

Being hard on yourself is human, but you deserve the same kindness you'd offer a friend. 💙
