Members with pulmonary arterial hypertension discussed why shortness of breath can occur even when pulse ox readings appear normal, with the key insight being that oxygen saturation only measures how much oxygen the blood can carry, not actual oxygen levels in the body. Several members, including those with medical backgrounds in respiratory therapy and nursing, emphasized that arterial blood gas tests give a much fuller picture, measuring factors like PO2, PCO2, and blood pH that a standard pulse ox misses. A warm recurring theme was members supporting each other through complex, overlapping conditions while sharing personal strategies like using supplemental oxygen at night and even daily karaoke as a creative way to practice breathing and build lung strength.

Blood gas is definitely an essential test. Mine always shows low. With O2 it's barely in the 70s. I see the pulse ox only as a guide, not a true picture of my O2 level.

Hi Daniel, do you have gout? A sign is uric acid elevated. I have found for myself that it doesn't matter what our O2 stat shows, with PH our bodies don't circulate blood like other people and we don't have the oxygen (no matter what our pulse/ox says) which causes shortness of breath and fatigue.
You might be able as a respiratory therapist to explain more to us. This is just my experience.

I believe I saw that you said you were a Nurse, I was in Respiratory Therapy , but I was code team leader , I was allowed to do intubations, and put in radial arterial lines , and run ventilators , with written or verb Doctors orders .Yes I have been cut on a lot, recently I am also having trouble with uric acid levels but don't understand why because the foods I eat are very low i purines . Btw, thanks for the friendship acceptance ..

Not sure I can remember, I just know that the arterial blood draw is crucial and shows more than a pulse ox does. My numbers definitely are different.
