How To Treat Shortness of Breath With PAH Read Article...
A myPHteam Member

Hi Marilyn. I live in Greeley. I was on oxygen when I'm quiet,(reading, TV) or sleeping. I've recently had some acute breathing issues and my UC Dr. said I should use it 24/7 even though my sats are 92. I think i notice a difference.
I see my Banner pulmonologist soon and he will reevaluate. It's not fun being tethered to tubing.

That's a really thoughtful question! Shortness of breath with normal oxygen levels can still feel very uncomfortable and disruptive.

Supplemental oxygen is typically prescribed based on measured oxygen levels dropping below a certain threshold. If your levels are reading okay, using extra oxygen without medical guidance isn't always recommended and could potentially interfere with your body's natural breathing signals. Here are some alternatives that may help when breathlessness hits but your oxygen levels are fine:

- Pursed-lip or pulse breathing — breathing in slowly and out in controlled bursts can help ease the feeling of breathlessness
- Rest and pacing — stopping activity and resting until you feel recovered
- Pulmonary rehabilitation techniques — if you've attended rehab, applying those breathing strategies can make a real difference

The best step is to check with your doctor or care team about whether using supplemental oxygen during these moments is appropriate for your specific situation. They can give personalized guidance based on your PH management plan.
