I am PH Group 2 Left Heart Disease and have been on Wegovy for about 7 months now, primarily for my heart failure but secondarily for weight loss.
I had to go off the Wegovy for a couple of weeks before 3 different procedures: an Ablation, getting a Watchman device implanted, and having a Transesophogeal Endoscopy. I'm not really clear on why I had to have those interruptions to my taking the GLP-1 med. I was told it had something to do with how much sugar the medication removes from your system and getting through the anesthesia...but I don't know if there isn't more to it than that.
Other than those procedure related interruptions, I have had no issues other than some constipation and now that I am on the highest dosage, a little brain fog and balance issues which seem to be going away.
I've lost 24 pounds so far.

Great question, and one worth exploring carefully. GLP-1 drugs (like semaglutide/Ozempic) are primarily used for managing blood sugar and weight loss. There's no conclusive evidence that they cause or worsen pulmonary hypertension, but research is still ongoing — especially for people with CTEPH and PAH. Here are some key things to keep in mind:
- Medication interactions: PAH and CTEPH treatments often include vasodilators, blood thinners, and diuretics. GLP-1 drugs could potentially interact with these, so a conversation with your doctor is essential before starting them.
- Side effects to watch for: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More serious but rare effects include breathing problems and changes in heart function — both worth monitoring closely given your condition.
- Weight management benefit: Weight loss from GLP-1 drugs may help ease pressure on the heart and lungs, which could be a positive factor for some people with PH. The bottom line: GLP-1 drugs aren't automatically off-limits, but they require careful consideration alongside your existing treatment plan. A specialist familiar with your PH management is the best person to help weigh the benefits and risks for your specific situation.
