Life is difficult enough sometimes and this illness doesn't help. I try to follow this motto. How does stress affect pulmonary arterial hypertension, and why is stress management important for PAH patients?
Stress can directly worsen PAH symptoms, particularly shortness of breath. A myPHteam member shared that stress made them short of breath even when it wasn't their norm, and another mentioned that breathing exercises weren't helping during particularly stressful work situations.
Living with PAH itself creates stress because it's a chronic, progressive condition that requires careful management. This stress can trigger anxiety and depression, which further impacts your overall health and quality of life.
Managing stress is crucial because:
- It helps prevent stress from worsening your PAH symptoms
- It reduces the risk of developing anxiety and depression
- It supports better overall heart and lung health
Effective stress management options include:
- Psychotherapy (talk therapy)
- Support groups for pulmonary hypertension
- Medication when needed
- Mindfulness practices
- Appropriate exercise under supervision
- Activities like yoga, which has been shown to help reduce stress
Making major lifestyle changes after diagnosis is often necessary to manage stress safely. Talk to your cardiologist or cardiology team about stress management strategies that work best for your situation.
