How long can someone live with PAH?
Life expectancy with PAH varies greatly from person to person and depends on several important factors. There isn't one simple answer because everyone's journey is different.
Key factors that influence life expectancy include:
- How severe your PAH is (measured by functional class)
- What type of PAH you have
- How well you respond to treatment
- Whether you develop complications like right-sided heart failure
- Your overall health and any other conditions
People with class 4 PAH (the most severe) who don't receive treatment may live less than six months on average. However, with proper treatment and management, many people live much longer.
Treatment has come a long way. The goal is to slow disease progression and manage symptoms effectively. Working closely with your healthcare team, taking medications as prescribed, and making lifestyle adjustments can significantly impact your quality of life and longevity.
