These symptoms are common with PAH because raising your arms above your head makes your heart work harder to pump blood. When you have PAH, your pulmonary arteries are already narrowed, making it difficult for blood to flow properly. This reduced blood flow means less oxygen reaches your brain and other parts of your body during activities, especially when reaching up.
Here are the key reasons for your symptoms:
• Shortness of breath occurs because your heart struggles to pump blood through narrowed arteries
• Dizziness and weakness happen when your brain isn't getting enough oxygen
• Nausea can develop when your body is under strain from reduced oxygen It's important to talk to your doctor about these symptoms, as they could indicate your PAH is progressing. Consider these tips to help manage symptoms:
• Avoid lifting heavy objects above your head
• Ask for help with high-reaching tasks
• Take breaks during activities
• Move more slowly when changing positions
• Keep commonly used items at waist level
If these symptoms are new or getting worse, contact your healthcare provider, as your treatment plan may need adjustment.
