Members shared their frustration over being misdiagnosed with asthma when they actually had pulmonary hypertension or other conditions, with several describing years of ineffective inhaler treatments before finally getting correct diagnoses. Many strongly recommended requesting a Methacholine Challenge test, which definitively confirms or rules out asthma, just as a right heart catheterization is the gold standard for PH diagnosis. A recurring theme was the importance of advocating for yourself when treatments aren't working, seeking second opinions, and not accepting lazy answers from doctors who may default to an asthma diagnosis without thorough testing.

I believe that I was misdiagnosed for years…

I did the Methacholine Challenge and it shows that I don't have asthma, but that I have vocal Cord Dysfunction. Asthma medication doesn't work, but the pulmonologist still asks if I'm taking them. When I Am sick is the only time I benefit from them.

I have found that many pulmonologists will jump into a diagnosis of asthma rather than admit they don’t have an answer. Back in NY I was diagnosed with asthma by no less than 4 doctors till another doctor had me take the Methacholine Challenge which proved it wasn’t asthma. It took going to another 2 or 3 doctors till I was correctly diagnosed with Bleomycin Pulmonary Toxicity.

(That is totally separate rom my PH which I was diagnosed with about 19 years later

If the Methacholine challenge was negative, you don’t have asthma. I had that test also over 2 decades ago when I eventually got diagnosed with Bleomycin Pulmonary Toxicity which I am in remission for. Totally unrelated to my PH which got diagnosed in 2023.

(Bleomycin is a chemo drug)

I had methacholine test done and they said it was negative. I was leaving the hospital and before going outside I could tell with breathing wasn't normal. I got home and 30 minutes later diarrhea, but yet test negative. This was about 2 years ago. I am on inhalers but never told if it's asthma.
