Eric, I am so sorry to hear about your job situation. It must be quite a blow to you since it was something you really enjoyed. I hope that this time will give you an opportunity to rest and plan your future activities. Please investigate disability coverage from Medicare too.
I retired on disability when I was diagnosed with chronic COPD. When I became retirement age at 62 I received my social security benefits. After Losing a lot of time out of work I was sent to a disability doctor for tests recommended by my primary physician
Let your primary Dr know how you have a hard time trying to work.
You might consider looking into Social Security Disability Insurance. I don't know the particulars, but even when you are collecting SSDI you are allowed to still work. There are income limits. Maybe you will find that you can manage on SSDI and still work a part-time job doing what you love.

I lost my job, so I assigned a representative to apply for social security for me. I am on unemployment now. I’ve been getting more rest.
