My Perspective: Pulmonary Hypertension: Persistence, Hope, and Love

Posted on December 19, 2019

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) means persistence and hope to me. I am newly diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, though I have had many health issues for years. I am only 40 years old, married to an amazing man, Joshua. We have a beautiful three-year-old daughter, Wynter. I still work part time as a home health registered nurse. I have a lot of empathy and compassion for my patient and her family.

I am still having more tests to evaluate causes for PH, and to develop a good treatment plan. I see many doctors and have been referred to the Cleveland Clinic Respiratory Institute. I have just begun using a CPAP machine at night for sleep apnea. I am on several medications, including asthma, gastrointestinal, and thyroid medications.

Initially when I was diagnosed, I thought that PH was a death sentence, that I may only live for two more years. But after much research, more tests, more doctors appointments, and joining myPHteam, I have great hope for my future.

I have made great, true friends on myPHteam, and would like to spread awareness of pulmonary hypertension. Though I once thought, "Why me? Now I believe why NOT me?" I believe that God has a plan for all of us. And this was my plan. I feel very lucky and blessed to have my family, job, and good health care. I believe that we all can make a difference, however small, if we continue with hope and persistence.

I continue to hope and persist, despite hardship, for my family and loved ones. I lost my 25-year-old brother to an overdose in 2018. Life is fleeting and so very BEAUTIFUL. We all need to make the very best of our time here.
