@A myPHteam Member Happy to hear about your friend going home. PT will help her. I believe it as I had similar issues after my surgery as well. I am right-handed however after surgery I was using my left hand due to issues with my right side. However, thank you Jesus with PT everything went back to normal in a short period of time.

How can physical therapy help with leg weakness during recovery after ECMO?

Leg weakness after ECMO can be challenging, but physical therapy can play an important role in your recovery. Physical therapists specialize in helping people with health conditions improve their physical functioning through targeted exercises.

For pulmonary hypertension, research shows that regular exercise under professional guidance can be safe and improve quality of life when the condition is well-managed. A physical therapist can create a personalized plan that takes into account your current strength and gradually helps you rebuild muscle function in your legs.

Here are ways physical therapy might help:

- Developing safe, gradual exercises to rebuild leg strength
- Teaching you proper techniques to avoid injury
- Monitoring your progress and adjusting activities as needed
- Helping you improve overall fitness while managing PH symptoms

Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise routine. They can refer you to a physical therapist who understands your specific situation and can work within the limitations of your condition.

Some myPHteam members have shared positive experiences with physical therapy, noting improvements in walking distance and overall mobility when working with their therapists. Recovery takes time, so be patient with yourself as you work toward regaining strength.
