Athens, Greece

I had to quit my job in Denmark because of PAH and I am currently in my home country Greece. I have no information yet if I will ever be able to work again. It's very heavy for me and my family, because I am only 34 and my younger sister also had a health problem that caused her difficulties with her career. I have zero income currently. Although medication has helped me I am often tired.

Members shared varied experiences with disability applications for pulmonary arterial hypertension, with some receiving approval in just a few months while others emphasized that PAH alone doesn't guarantee approval and that the process often involves initial denials requiring persistent appeals. Several members offered practical guidance, including applying as early as possible even if unsure about returning to work, meticulously documenting all medical records and test results, never giving up through the appeal process, and understanding that approval timelines and outcomes vary widely by country and individual circumstances. A recurring theme was the emotional weight of navigating disability systems while young and dealing with progressive illness, balanced by encouragement to advocate persistently and hope for improvement or suitable work accommodations.

I don’t know how your disability system works in Greece, but here, with Social Security, PH does qualify for disability though statistically they reject almost all applications initially. I did my own appeal process back in New York for a different lung issue and had to turn in quite a few sworn affidavits. Even then I think it only went through as I started to have stroke symptoms while being examined by their own doctor and they sent me to a hospital via ambulance.

I am doing currently much better than i was first diagnosed. My RHC was postponed. I do not have any problems with oxygen and its just my walking capacity that is not perfect and lifting weights. My previous work was not so physical to justify going completely out of work. So I was advised to just apply for sedentary jobs.

Julie,
Knowing how the disability system works, when yours went through so rapidly with no denials, did you feel like that is confirmation that you are worse or a lot messed up than you thought? ha I know I did.
