What's the point of an initial doctors appt w/ a specialist. Why can't they set all those test up before we come?

I don't understand why our initial appointment with a specialist, is solely made up of making appointments to have test done and then creating follow up appts to see that specialist again once you have the test done and they read the results! Why???!!!!

Members acknowledged the frustration of initial specialist appointments that seem to only schedule tests and follow-ups, but emphasized that these visits serve critical purposes including hands-on physical assessments, personalized symptom evaluation, and relationship-building with a doctor who will guide long-term care. Several members explained practical reasons behind the process, such as insurance companies requiring progressive testing from least to most invasive or expensive, doctors needing to review prior records and examine patients before determining which specific tests are warranted, and the importance of coordinating scheduling and preparation instructions directly with patients. A recurring theme was patience and trust in the diagnostic journey, with members sharing that while the process feels slow and redundant, it ultimately leads to accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment plans that can be lifesaving.

It’s frustrating isn’t it. Especially the blood draw part. Not as a new patient, you don’t want to start off on the wrong foot, but after you’ve been established, I’ve asked my Dr if he could put the orders in before the appt. That way we could discuss them during the appt. Common sense right? Duh!! 🤪

Even with that, they need to know your symptoms to know what blood test to draw. With me, my symptoms are always the same so I can put the cart before the horse.

Additionally, insurance may require certain indicators to be assessed before they can approve expensive testing. I am not sure, but I believe my Medicare requires an echo be done before they will cover a RHC and I needed a blood test before I could get a bone marrow test which I needed before having a PET Scan, etc.
